How this list was chosen

The newest Stack Overflow Developer Survey (2025) asked developers which languages and which web frameworks they had used. This list takes the seven most-used languages, leaving out HTML/CSS (markup) and the shells Bash and PowerShell, and the three most-used web frameworks and technologies, leaving out the legacy library jQuery. Each figure is the share of everyone who answered that question.

GitHub’s own data points the same way: in August 2025, TypeScript became the most-used language on GitHub by number of contributors.
